About seven months after the Pearl Harbor attack, VMF 214 was formed in Hawaii and deployed to the New Hebrides a month later. They were joined by their new Commanding Officer, Maj Gregory Boyington. Under "Pappy's" leadership, during their first shore based combat tour they damaged or destroyed 203 aircraft, multiple ships, attacked myriad ground targets, produced nice fighter "aces," and won a Presidential Unit Citation.

After flying the F4F Wildcat and F4U Corsair during WW2, the Black Sheep have operated the F9F Panther, F2H Banshee, FJ Fury, and from 1989 until 2022 the AV-8B Harrier II. Operating both the radar equipped AV-8B+ and the depicted AV-8B Night Attack jet, they are currently based at MCAS Yuma and are transitioning to the F-35B.

164117 is depicted in a 3-tone grey camo pattern loaded for a Close Air Support sortie. She carries a pair of MK 89 Snake Eye high drag bombs on the outboard stations and another six mounted on TER-9 racks on the middle wing stations. Inboard, she has a pair of 330-gallon external tanks. Under her belly, she carries a pair of pod mounted 25mm cannons with 300 rounds each and full magazines of chaff and flare expendables.

Any Fighter Studios print can be customized with different squadron marking, different store configurations, names on the nose or canopy rail. To get yours started, click Personalized Print for more information or click Email with questions.
