Fixed Wing Attack Squadron Marine Three One Two (VMA 312) originally converted to the F4U Corsair during WW2 flying their first combat sorties in early 1945. When the war ended, they briefly converted to Tigercats before transitioning back to Corsairs… this time the updated and higher performance F4U-4. In 1950, the Checkerboards deployed to Woson Korea.

BuNo 97116 is depicted ready for a ground support sortie from K-1 airfield. She is configured with eight HVAR 5-inch rockets and her wing mounted Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns. She also carries a pair of 75 Gallon US drop tanks.
