In 2009, the Dixie Viper’s of the Alabama ANG became the 100th Fighter Squadron “Red Tails” to the Tuskegee Airmen distinguished heritage earned flying P-47’s and P-51 in WWII’s European Theater or Operations. The change was purely a paperwork and patch exercise as the 160th FS’s F-16, personnel, and facilities remained unchanged although their base was redesignated as Montgomery Air National Guard Base.

In keeping with the Tuskegee heritage, several of the squadron’s jets received a heritage paint scheme including a bright red tail with a black stripe at the trailing edge like the unit’s P-51’s black trim tabs. One of those jets, 87-0336 is shown ready for an Defensive Counter Air sortie loaded with 5 x AIM-120C’s, a single AIM-9X, a pair of 370 gallon wing tanks, and a AN/AAQ-28(v) Litening II targeting pod.

Any Fighter Studios print can be customized with different squadron marking, different store configurations, names on the nose or canopy rail. To get yours started, click Personalized Print for more information or click Email with questions.
