The Happy Hooligans of the 178 Fighter Interceptor Squadron provided air defense alert 54 years while home stationed at Hector Field in Fargo, North Dakota. Using the P-51/F-51 Mustang, the F-94 Starfire, the F-89 Scorpion, the F-102 Delta Dagger, The F-101 Voodoo, the F-4 Phantom II, and finally the F-16. The 178 FIS provided alert at NAS Keflavik Iceland, Ramstein AB Germany, Kingsley Field Oregon, March AFB California, and Langley AFB Virginia. They additionally provided detachments to multiple CONUS locations during OPERATION DESERT STORM.

Fighter operations ceased, and the Hooligans converted to the C-21 Learjet and then to the MQ-1 Predator drone, but before that, they won the USAF’s William Tell competition three times and are the only F-16 unit to achieve that honor.

81-773 is shown with a full load out of 2 x AIM-120C’s, 2 x AIM-7M’s, and 2 x AIM-9M’s and a pair of 370 gallon external tanks. Although it was later moved to the fuselage below the rear canopy transparency, for a period, the Hooligans proudly displayed their “Rough Rider” Teddy Roosevelt graphic on their Viper’s tail.

Any Fighter Studios print can be customized with different squadron marking, different store configurations, names on the nose or canopy rail. To get yours started, click Personalized Print to get started or Email with questions.
